With the onslaught of distributed energy resources (DERs) into utility networks, the industry is abuzz about the potential of distributed energy resource management systems (DERMS) to effectively manage a more distributed grid. Along with the excitement and vision, however, comes questions about how DERMS fits into the real world of utilities. Do utilities need to build a new system for DERMS? Or, can they revamp existing systems, such as demand response management systems (DRMS) or advanced distribution management systems (ADMS)? What shape will DERMS take within their organizations? We need to take a step back from the buzz and consider what DERMS truly means for utilities. This research explores:
